Rough and Smooth

2013 has proved a fascinating and busy year so far. Working on Tom Dixonʼs Rough and Smooth furniture collection set the tone for going on to photograph everything from a rough old pair of boots for JWTʼs ʻStep Upʼ campaign to the idiosyncratic designs of Fabrica and Loris&Liviaʼs smooth glassware. Iʼve kept wonderfully warm whilst shooting for Oyuna cashmere, scouted out a location to capture the dream pop sound of The High Wire, shot the most glamourous nightclub brawl ever, marvelled at the grand sets for Moooiʼs 2013 Collection, and been privileged to photograph Legas Delaneyʼs subtle and moving new campaign for Shelter.

It was a great honour to work on Tom Dixonʼs 2013 Collection, Rough & Smooth, and such a fascinating challenge for my camera and lights to capture the contrasting roughness of the materials and their beautifully reworked smooth surfaces.

One morning in May a very cool brief came through from JWTʼs creative team, Giles Hepworth and Bill Hartley and art buyer Kate Congreve. I was sent a pair of extremely worn out army boots and asked to shoot them as if taking the portrait of an old man. ʻWe want to see all the scratches, cracks and dirt they’ve picked up along the way!ʼ

A new addition of intriguing glass creations photographed for my own playground of images. Small Martian, designed by Fabrica for Secondome and the Tipsy glasses by Loris&Livia are amongst my favorite pieces!

As the day drifted into a typically fresh London evening, I was lent a cashmere scarf to wear for the street location shoot and it certainly was not easy to give it back at the end of the day! It was no surprise that the wonderful models, cozily wrapped in the OYUNA A/W 2013 Collection, did not complain about the cold at all! A cashmere collection to die for.

July sees the release of long awaited new music from The High Wire and I was tasked to find a location and shoot in a style that would capture the London-based bandʼs dream pop sound. We settled for a peculiar and interesting spot near Tower Bridge. Watch this space for our upcoming video collaboration!

Getting in each other’s hair can get messy, especially outside the back street exit of a nightclub in the early hours of the morning. Seta Niland styled this night shoot with pieces from Haizhen Wang, Helmut Lang, Gareth Pugh and Bondinage.

Simone (left) wears: Dress by Haizhen Wang, Tutu by Bella Rosettes, Gloves by H&M, Chocker by Lyall Hakaraia, Bracelets by Maria Piana, Shoes by Terry de Havilland. Jazzi (right) wears: Leather top by Gareth Pugh, Skirt by Helmut Lang, Cuffs by Shaun Leane, Tutu by Freed Dancewear (customised), Shoes by Atsuko Kudo for Bondinage, String Curtain as skirt from John Lewis, T-shirt as body by G-Star Raw (customised)

Being asked to photograph and capture the fun and creativity of MOOOIʼs 2013 Collection was nothing short of an amazing pleasure for me. The presentation was spread out over fourteen colossal room sets art directed by Marcel Wanders, styled by Martine De Schipper and Desiree De Jong was creative director. If time were not an issue, I would still be there happily shooting!

I am delighted that Art Director, Chris Felstead, from Legas Delaney invited me to shoot Shelterʼs new Advertising Campaign. The concept was to photograph the last house your kids will possibly ever own or call their own. For this we chose three emotional family settings, a dolls house, a play house and a tree house. Each one is shown in early evening dusk light, after the kids that played there happily throughout the day have left and gone for dinner and bedtime.
